We’re all human, and none of us can be productive 100% of the time, however, one of the main barriers to results is not using your time wisely. Here are some key ideas for increasing productivity without wasting time…
Start measuring results instead of time
Productivity should ultimately be measured in terms of results, rather than in terms of the time put into getting those results. Evaluate yourself by what you’ve actually got done, rather than the time taken to get that done, and you’ll begin to notice a difference in how you work.
Breaking things down into sections can help you to measure these results; creating smaller tasks within a project allows you to keep track of the small victories, rather than getting lost in what you think you should have achieved in that time frame.
Find out where it is you are wasting time
Track how you use your time throughout the day to identify where you lose productive time. This could be anything from taking extra time to choose what to wear in the morning to checking news websites.
Once you’ve noted where you are wasting time, make changes specific to those habits, instead of deciding to be productive in all areas and slipping into your old ways a week later.
Rethink the to-do list
Increase your productivity by limiting your to-do list. Instead of having a long list of small jobs to tick off, choose the three most important and time consuming tasks and do them first.
Another tip is to write your to-do list the night before, instead of wasting time in the morning. Often getting the list out of your head and on to paper can help you to relax and unwind before bed, and saves you time the next day.
Separate your to-do at some point and your to-do today lists. Every night, move the high priority things onto your today list, ensuring you don’t put under too much pressure by the someday list.
Create work inducing habits
By building a routine that informs your brain and body it’s time to work, you can find a way around the obstacle of procrastination.
Try starting your day with your morning coffee or tea at your desk, but only allowing yourself to look at your favourite websites until you’ve finished. Finishing the drink will signal to your brain that it’s time to work, and over time this will become habit.
