Whilst most people focus on starting the day in the right way, doing the right things at the end of your day can really boost your productivity. By ending your working day with lots of loose ends and things on your mind, both your home life and sleep will be negatively impacted, so follow these tips to clear your mind and enhance your efficiency.
Address all work communication before leaving work – Obviously you could spend hours of your personal time replying to all the emails and calls you’ve received during the day, but focus on dealing with those that are especially pertinent or need immediate action. Even if you only reply saying that you will get back to them the next day, you will feel like you have your communications in check. By getting these out of the way by the end of the day, you won’t feel like they are hanging over you in the evening.
Get one organisational project out of the way – Schedule twenty minutes at the end of every day to do those organisational jobs that you never seem to find time for. Clearing your inbox or your desk will make you feel as though you’ve accomplished something, and will allow you to start work the next day with a fresh outlook.
Make your to-do list at the end of the day – By reviewing what you’ve done that day, and what you need to do the next, you’ll ensure that you’ve not left any tasks unfinished or forgotten about. Make your list for the next day before you get caught up in the inevitable flurry of morning emails, and you’ll have more focus on the task at hand.
Shut down – ‘The more time you put into work, the better results’ is not necessarily true. Evidently hard work produces the best results, but this does not mean that working right up until you go to bed will benefit your role. Set a time at which you’ll put down your phone, laptop or tablet, and stick to it. Most problems are best solved when you’re fully awake and ready to give them your all.
